Hand-Painted Butterfly Wooden Earrings – Lightweight Double-Sided Design

This butterfly was never meant to hide the wood beneath the color.

Vivid magenta moves across the wings while areas of natural American linden remain visible, creating a contrast between bold color and the warmth of the wood itself. The engraved lines add another layer of detail, giving the wings definition without making the design feel printed or overly perfect.

Each butterfly begins as 2 mm American linden wood that I laser-cut and engrave before painting it by hand. Because I leave part of the natural surface exposed, you can still see the grain and character of the material that the earring started from.

And this is one butterfly that doesn’t lose its beauty when it turns.

I finish the same design on both sides, so movement doesn’t reveal a plain or forgotten back. Whether the earring faces forward or shifts as you walk, the magenta color, engraved detail, and natural wood remain part of what you see.

At approximately 2 inches including the hook, the butterfly has enough presence for the wing shape and color to stand out without needing to be oversized. The thin wooden construction keeps it lightweight, while hypoallergenic silver-tone hooks offer a more comfortable option for ears that may be sensitive to some metals.

What makes this pair distinctive isn’t simply that it is shaped like a butterfly. It’s the combination of vivid color, exposed wood, engraving, and a finish that was considered from both directions.

Outfit idea: Pair them with a soft sage or eucalyptus-green blouse and cream trousers. The muted green gives the magenta a beautiful botanical contrast while keeping the look soft and natural. For something simpler, try a charcoal top with light denim and let the butterflies provide the color.
